Moving House with Kids and Pets: Your Guide to a Calm and Organised Transition

Moving house can be an exciting yet challenging time for families, especially when you have little ones and furry friends to consider. That’s why I thought I would share my top tips on how to prepare for moving house with kids and pets in tow, while keeping things calm and organised.

1. Communication is Key

Start by having an open and honest conversation with your children about the upcoming move. Explain why you’re moving, and involve them in the planning process. This will help ease any anxiety they might have and make them feel included in this new adventure.

2. Create a Moving Checklist

To stay organised, create a moving checklist that includes all the tasks you need to complete before, during, and after the move. This will not only ensure that everything gets done but also give your kids a sense of accomplishment and involvement.

3. Pack an “Essentials” Bag

Pack a separate bag for each family member with their must-have items for the first few days in the new home. Include toiletries, a change of clothes, favourite toys or books, and any special items that will provide comfort during the transition. This way, you won’t have to rummage through boxes to find essentials, and everyone will have what they need within easy reach.

4. Give Kids and Pets a Safe Space

Consider arranging for a trusted friend or family member to look after them during the move or designate a specific room in the house where they can stay away from the chaos. Fill this space with familiar items, toys, and treats to help ease any stress or anxiety they may experience.

5. Enlist Help

Moving with kids and pets can be challenging, so don’t hesitate to ask for help. Reach out to family, friends, or professionals who can lend a hand during the moving process. Having extra assistance will not only make things more manageable but also allow you to focus on ensuring your family’s comfort and well-being during this time.

6. Stick to Routines

Moving can disrupt your family’s usual routines, but try to maintain some sense of normalcy amidst the chaos. Stick to regular meal times, bedtimes, and activity schedules as much as possible. Familiarity and routine can help children and pets feel secure during this period of change.

7. Introduce Pets to the New Environment Gradually

Take the time to gradually introduce your pets to their new environment. Start by confining them to a specific area, such as a single room or a fenced-off backyard, before gradually expanding their territory. This will help them adapt more easily and prevent them from becoming overwhelmed.

8. Settling into the New Area

As you settle into your new home, take the opportunity to explore the suburb with your family. Locate nearby parks, schools, and pet-friendly spaces.

Moving house with kids and pets may require some extra planning and patience, but with the right approach, it can also be an exciting and positive experience for the whole family.
